Genioplasty (Chin surgery)

A genioplasty (or mentoplasty) forms part of profiloplasty interventions, which modify certain aspects of the face to make it more harmonious. When the chin is too protruding or receding, asymmetric or too small, it can be modified either by inserting an implant or adding filler (hyaluronic acid, liquid collagen, or transferred fat).

A genioplasty can sometimes be combined with certain maxillofacial operations to set the mandible forward or back, thus achieving an even more natural result.

ADDED EXTRA

Crisalix is 3D simulation software that shows the results of aesthetic surgery. This tool helps patients better express their request and enables surgeons to give clear, reasoned explanations. Patients are therefore better informed when they decide to have an operation.

QUESTIONS/ANSWERS

  • Is there a lot of pain?
There is moderate pain, which is relieved effectively by level 1 analgesics (Paracetamol®). Applying cold (ice bag protected by a cloth) to the chin is very beneficial.
  • Can you eat and drink normally after the intervention?
The food must not be hot, acidic or spicy. You are therefore advised to eat cold food, preferably blended or liquid. Alcohol can delay healing and should therefore be avoided.
  • What are the post-operative after-effects?
Slight bleeding may occur in the mouth, although this is not serious. Healing depends on good oral hygiene, which is helped by using mouthwash after every meal. The neck, cheeks and/or lips may remain swollen for a few days and the lower lip is sometimes less sensitive.
