Otoplasty (Protruding ear surgery)

This is an intervention to pin back one or both ears. Although it is covered by health insurance if carried out on children from the age of 7, this is not the case for adults.

  • Where are the scars located?
    The scars are behind the ears and are completely invisible.
  • Is this intervention a risk to your hearing?
    This intervention presents no risk to your hearing since the surgeon only intervenes on the outer ear.

Useful information

Before the intervention

  • Two consultations need to be arranged: one with the plastic surgeon and the other with the anaesthetist.
  • You will be given a quote and a mutual informed consent form, which must both be signed before the intervention.
  • Pre-operative photographs are taken.
  • Stop smoking 1 month before the intervention
  • Do not take aspirin (except for cardiovascular indications to be discussed with your cardiologist and/or anaesthetist) for 10 days before the intervention.
  • Do not take anti-inflammatory drugs for 10 days before the intervention.
  • 15-day medico-legal reflection period (which cannot be shortened) the 1st consultation and the intervention.
  • Wash your hair with Septivon® antiseptic solution the day before the intervention.

Day of the intervention

  • General anaesthetic for children and/or local anaesthetic (+/- diazanalgesia) for adults.
  • Duration of the intervention: 1 hour on average.
  • You can go home the same day (outpatient procedure).

After the intervention

  • No drain is inserted.
  • The stitches are not removed since they are absorbable.
  • Moderate pain, which is relieved effectively by level 1 analgesics (Paracetamol®).
  • Wear a headband for 24 hours after the intervention.
  • Wear an ear band day and night for 1 week, then at night for 1 month after the intervention.
  • You can start wearing your glasses again a few days after the intervention.
  • Return to work: after 2-7 days, depending on your work environment.
  • Result obtained: immediately, with the final result after 2 months.
  • Resume sport: after 1 month.
  • Consultations after 15 days, 3, 6 and 12 months for a clinical check-up and to take post-operative photographs.
